Whether you are making homemade ornaments to dress the Christmas tree, making colorful paper chains to deck the halls of your home or making Christmas cookies, crafting with the kids is a great way to add a little sparkle to your Christmas. Here is a list of different ideas.
Homemade Colored Christmas Ornaments
You can take clear lightbulbs, put chunks of crayons inside and gently melt with a hairdryer and turn to make swirled ornaments of any colors you and your kids like!
Winter Decorating
Get the family together and turn up the Christmas music while you cut snowflakes out of paper and hang them in your windows.
Kid – Friendly Christmas Cookies
Bake a couple dozen sugar cookies in Christmas shapes. Set up the cooled cookies and different kinds of sprinkles, colored candies and frosting and let the kids go nuts decorating Christmas cookies as a family.
Paper Plate Characters
Draw Christmas characters like Santa, Rudolph and Frosty The Snowman on paper plates and let the kids color them and add decorations to them to make them their own.
Gingerbread Village
Making a gingerbread house is always nice but how about an entire village. If you are really ambitious, you can make all the gingerbread pieces yourself. You could easily just purchase kits from pretty much any store during the holiday season and build a gingerbread village with your kids and maybe even some of their friends.
Christmas tree Skirt
It’s as easy as buying some felt, cutting out a u – shape large enough to fit around your tree as a skirt. Then with other colored felt pieces, have the kids trace Christmas shapes and cut them out to glue onto the skirt. It is a great way to give your tree a sentimental touch. You can also save it and pass it along the family.
Penguin Light Bulb Ornaments
Save the lightbulbs that burn out throughout the year. Paint them black and white like penguins with the twist part as the top of the head to put hats over. Make hats and scarfs out of paint, fabric or even paper! Stick the ornament hook through the hat and hang from the tree or around the house.
Other crafts you can make with your kids include:
- Popsicle Stick Sled Ornaments
- Paper Cup Terrarium
- Holiday Wreaths
With simple baking ingredients, some basic craft tools and supplies or other household items, you can make these and many more other Christmas crafts with your family. All materials you could need for any of these projects, you probably already have and if you do not, they are extremely affordable or you can always use your own clever substitute. A craft should be treated as your own creation and not a list of exact instructions.

I think Justin will be interested in making popsicle stick sled ornaments, but that will have to wait until they’re done with their class Christmas party. Thanks for the suggestion!
