3 Fun Dress-Up Party Themes

Mainstream parties are so last millennium. To host a get-together that will leave your guests with happy memories (and awesome pics!), you need a fantastic theme. Forget the done-to-death regular concepts though; it’s time to dish up an extreme theme that will have attendees getting excited weeks before the party and talking about it for weeks afterwards. Scratch ‘smart casual’ off your invitation right now and try out one of these fun ideas!

1. Clash of the Universes

Imagine Superman facing off against the Hulk. Or your favourite Pixar characters battling for glory against the heroes and villains of the Star Wars galaxy. With a ‘Clash of the Universes’ party, all of this (and more) is possible. Once you have your RSVPs all in, sort your guests into about four teams categorized by the fictional universes of your choice. Thanks to costume specialist stores such as Disguises, , it will be a cinch for each person to get into character.

That settles your dress code for the party, but take the theme even further by arranging a tournament of sorts. Consider a round of movie trivia, an obstacle course, and maybe a ‘best team photo’ competition – the options here are limited only by your imagination.

2. Murder in the Circus

Circuses are a whole lot of fun. Murder mystery parties are a whole lot of fun. Blend the two together and what do you get? The perfect combination of comedy and thrill. The conceptual set-up is similar to any ‘whodunit’ style party – you need to designate a role to each attendee, carefully position some vital clues, and create an intriguing tale to keep everyone in suspense.

The key difference to this idea is the scenario; instead of your standard crime-scene-like location, your murder has taken place in a circus environment. This setting allows for the usual serious tone of solving the case to be underpinned by a sense of fun and amusement. Does that surly strongman have a dark secret? Is that friendly clown capable of killing? It’s all fun and games until someone gets murdered… and then it’s still fun and games!

3. Post-Apocalyptic Fairy Tale

What do Snow White, Red Riding Hood, Alice, and Prince Charming all look like when the fantasy world as they knew it has come to an end? When the enchanted forest has burnt to the ground and the fancy castles have all crumbled, how do the surviving fairy-tale folk get by? Force your guests to explore this edgy concept with a ‘Post-Apocalyptic Fairy Tale’ theme.

The standard costumes won’t do here; you’ll need to go to extra efforts to make your once-wonderful outfits more fitting for the ruins of Wonderland (or whichever classical kingdom you choose). Is Aurora’s beautiful dress tattered and tarnished? How have the clothes of the seven dwarves coped with the harsh conditions of this post-apocalyptic world? Find out with this theme.
