One of my wishes as a mommy is to take my daughter, Ykaie, to see a musical. We’ve seen movies and we’ve been to plays but we’ve never been to a musical, not once. I know how musicals can be inspirational because of songs that stirs the emotions and the lessons that is learned in some.
Here’s a list of five (5) inspirational musicals that I wish my daughter and I could watch:
- The Book of Mormon – a religious satire musical with book, lyrics, and music by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, and Matt Stone. The Book of Mormon tells the story of two young Mormon missionaries sent to a remote village in northern Uganda, where a brutal warlord is threatening the local population. The two optimistic but naive missionaries tried to share the Book of Mormon, one of their scriptures, but had trouble connecting with the locals, who are more worried about war, famine, poverty, and AIDS than about religion. - Wicked – Wicked’s full title is Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz. It’s the story of the The Wizard of Oz but is told from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz. This musical starts after Dorothy’s arrival in Oz from Kansas and tells the story of two unlikely friends, Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (the Good Witch of the North), who struggle through opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, reactions to the Wizard’s corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba’s public fall from grace. Ykaie already knows the story of The Wizard of Oz, it would be refreshing for her to know the witch’s side of this story. I know this musical is currently playing here. I’m gonna find out where I could buy some tickets.
- Les Miserables -we all know this musical as Les Mis or Les Miz and is a sung-through musical based on the novel of the same name by French poet and playwright Victor Hugo. Set in early 19th-century France, it is the story of Jean Valjean, a burly French peasant of abnormal strength and potentially violent nature, and his quest for redemption after serving nineteen years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread for his starving sister’s child.
- The Lion King – is a musical based on the 1994 Disney animated film of the same name with music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice. It tells the story of Simba, a young lion who is to take his father Mufasa’s place as king. However Simba’s uncle Scar kills Mufasa. Simba then must stop his uncle from conquering the Pride Lands and avenge his father. I think Ykaie will like this musical because she is already familiar with the story.
- Cats Cats – a musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make what is known as “the Jellicle choice” and decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life. This was shown in theaters a couple of years ago but Ykaie was still too young at the time to see a musical so naturally, I didn’t even try to watch it.
