I just read the news about peanuts and peanut butter from Sunland Inc. in the US.
The news said that starting September 24th, the company began recalling products made before March 2012. Todayall Sunland peanut products made after that date are also being recalled by the company in voluntary cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
All of this began when a rare strain of salmonella was discovered in a single jar of Trader Joe’s-brand Valencia peanut butter.
We love peanut butter at home and I personally love it. I’m glad that children here in the Philippines is not prone to peanut butter-allergy. But this news about peanut butter having salmonella has just made me nervous. My brother loves buying peanut butter from the local wet market and sis has warned me about buying there because she said that the process of making it is unsanitary. Plus the oil that they use is the regular cooking oil.
I guess, we’ll just finish the large bottle at home, then I’ll start buying Ehje’s. Ehje’s is a local brand which Ms. Nadine Tengco, the nutritionist from The Biggest Loser, Philippines highly recommends.
Peanut butter is healthy as long as it’s not packed with oil and lots of sugar.
